South Sioux City, NE | Bronze Level

Engineering: In May the first phases of the Sgt Floyd Underlook Trail was started. The $59,300 first phase sets the ground work for the future expansion of the trial and the city as it winds behind and through an existing and new residential area. All of the $180,000 funding for Phase 2, which will extend east towards the Floyd Monument near the Missouri River, is complete. Last fall $120,000 work began on two and a half miles of trail between Dakota City and South Sioux City. Once complete the trail will connect to the current 6.5 miles of trail that already exist in South Sioux. The Veterans Bridge downtown is open to cyclists and pedestrians and its eight foot biking/walking lane is completely separate from motorized traffic. South Sioux City is a rural town and virtually all streets are very low traffic streets. Many have been designated bike routes to alert autos to heavy bicycle use.
