Bicycle Friendly Communities

Oxford, MS | Bronze Level

Community Highlights: On the heels of a 2003 comprehensive bicycle plan, Oxford has implemented 5 miles of bike lanes, 7 miles of signed bike routes and 7 miles of rail trail conversion. The Double Decker Spring Ride is one of the most well known and well attended cycling events in the region.
Half of the city’s elementary schools take part in Safe Routes to School programs and local advocates have a monthly column in the town newspaper to address bicycling issues including how to share the road. With Oxford Convention and Visitor’s Bureau sponsorship of a cycling team, a BMX track and additional multi-use path trails being planned, Oxford is leading the way for other Mississippi communities.

Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: Oxford recently secured $3.6 million in funding for many cycling related improvements including a rail trail conversion, Safe Routes to School programming and transportation enhancements to include bike/pedestrian accommodations.
