Community Highlights: While many of the country’s top cyclists, including World and National champs, in road, mountain and BMX call Durango home it is a great place to live and ride for cyclists of all abilities. With 700 miles of offroad trails and approximately 1/4 of road network featuring bike lanes and designated bike routes Durango boasts a 5 percent bicycle mode share. Durango continues to promote bicycling through its support of Bike to Work Day, with a Commuter Challenge and street party reaching 1200 participants last year. Durango also hosts the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, Tour de Fat and this summer's plans also include a Tour-De- Durango, a one-day fun ride which will highlight riding all the bike paths, lanes and trails within City limits. Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: Durango has just completed the 7 mile Animas River Trail bike path. This 10 year project required some pretty creative engineering along with cooperation between business, government and community. They are now addressing anexation of an additional 10 miles to this trail system. Last year, voters approved a 1/4 percent sales tax increase to fund trail and open space to help fund this project as well as others. |
