Sacramento Region

MAY IS BIKE MONTH
Annual Campaign Challenges Region to Bike One Million Miles. It’s almost that time again when bicyclists tune up their bicycles and those who haven’t bicycled in a while think about swapping four wheels for two. The Sacramento region continues its annual campaign to promote bicycling this May.

The campaign challenges the region’s residents, through friendly competition, to log one million miles of bicycling collectively. In May 2008, over 5,700 participants of all ages logged 1,242,215 miles in the region making it the first Million Mile May. This sets the bar high for 2009, but we believe that the Sacramento region is up to the challenge.

The region—which includes El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba counties—is home to many bicycle-friendly communities and regional trails. Events are planned throughout the month to recruit and encourage people to try bicycling for some of their trips. Bike Month is for anyone who uses a bike to commute, run errands, or exercise. No matter how frequently you ride, logging miles at www.mayisbikemonth.com will help the region reach a collective goal of one million miles.

On Friday, May 1, the region kicks off the month with a noontime ride and press conference in downtown Sacramento, hosted by honorary co-chairs Roseville Councilmember Jim Gray and Davis Mayor pro Tempore Don Saylor.

On Saturday, May 2, local rides will be held in all areas of the six-county region. Energizer stations will be set up with refreshments, giveaways and information about bicycling.

On Thursday, May 21, the region celebrates Bike-to-Work Day with a BikeFest at the State Capitol. The Sacramento BikeFest will feature prizes, booths hosted by bike shops and bike groups, as well as commute information.

Throughout the month, there will be weekly prize drawings, group and employer challenges, rallies, awards, safety clinics, energizer stations and organized rides.

May is Bike Month is coordinated by the Sacramento Area Council of Governments and the region's transportation management associations and organizations. For more information, visit www.mayisbikemonth.com or call (916) 321-9000.

Ycycle Green Fit Fun Ride will take place on the American River Bike trail Saturday May 9th. This event will be FREE to all people who ride out to and on the American River Bike Trail. Ycycle will be giving out FREE food and water. Visit www.Ycycle.org for more information.

Portland

The City of Portland Transportation Options Division will be hosting our annual Bike to Work Breakfast for cyclists on Tuesday, May 12, in celebration of Bike to Work Week and Bike Month. The event will be held at Pioneer Courthouse Square - Portland's Living Room - from 7:30 to 9:00 AM. Contact Barbara Plummer, City of Portland, Bureau of Transportation, 503-823-4584.

Portland Farmers Market has announced that this May will be their first-ever Bike Month at the Market.

Throughout the month, the Saturday PSU Market will host a bike booth featuring bike displays, bike inspections and biking experts to provide market-goers with the information and inspiration to tote their produce and artisan foods home on two wheels instead of four.

According to a survey conducted at the market, 60% of shoppers arrive by car. And a visit on any Saturday morning finds a serious parking deficit and slow-circling cars hunting for a spot near the booths. Market organizers say they hope that Bike Month will help solve the parking problem as well as encouraging the community to make the connection between local food and sustainable transportation.

Besides information, maps, and friendly advice on topics from routes to cargo carrying to adjusting your brakes, the bike booth is hosting a raffle. Each $5 ticket earns you a chance to win one of three exciting prizes: a Townie Xtracycle with a child seat from Clever Cycles; a conversion by Joe Bike of your road or mountain bike to a commuting, cargo-carrying machine; and a LifeCycling urban everyday riding skills clinic from BIKEmpowered.

The month will also feature weekly clinics, beginning this Saturday, May 9th with a Bike Bucket construction workshop at 10am and a Crash Free Forever skills workshop at 11am. Other weeks will feature different clinics and displays of “market ready” bikes. See their website for a full schedule.

The month’s bike activities culminate on the final Saturday, May 30th. Group rides starting from points around the city will converge at the market at 11am for free snacks, kids’ activities, and the raffle prize drawing. (Stay tuned for details — or contact Anna (anna at portlandfarmersmarket dot org or 503 241 0032 if you’d like to volunteer to lead a ride.)
