YES NO Does your campus have a comprehensive, connected and well-maintained bicycling network?
A great bicycling network is made up of a combination of on-road and separated bike facilities that accommodate and connect to every destination on campus
YES NO Is bike parking readily available throughout the campus?
Providing secure and visible bike parking for all destinations is vital to getting more people on bikes on campus and traveling by bike to campus.
YES NO Is the college or university easily accessible by bike?
The accessibility and connectivity of the campus to the larger community is important to encouraging commuting via bike on- and off-campus.

Education

YES NO Does the college or university offer bicycling education classes for students and staff?
There are many levels of bicycling education on college campuses. For example, the League offers the Smart Cycling program through League Cycling Instructors in communities throughout the country. Find an instructor or class in your area!
YES NO Are there classes for campus motorists on how to share the road with cyclists?
Much can and should be done to further educate motorists and cyclists on how to properly share the road. In addition to signage, communities and campuses are offering instruction through traffic ticket diversion programs and Public Service Announcements – to name a few.

Encouragement

YES NO Does your college or university have an up-to-date bicycle map?
Bike maps are critical to safely navigating a campus and for encouraging people to get to where they want to go by bike.
YES NO Are there incentives offered for students and staff that commute by bike?
YES NO Is there an active bicycle advocacy group at the college or university?
Bicycle Friendly Universities take a lot of work from all levels ranging from students, clubs and administration. Having a campus group advocating for bike-friendly policies, programs and accommodations is key to getting things done.
YES NO Is there an on-campus bike center for rentals and repairs?
Many of the best bicycling campuses have a bicycling center that offer everything from repairs, rentals, education and friends to ride with.

Enforcement

YES NO Do campus safety/law enforcement officers receive training on the rights and responsibilities of all road users?
Safety and law enforcement officers can play a huge role in protecting your rights and keeping roadways safe for all users. Courses that focus on these areas are available for agencies.
YES NO Does your campus have law enforcement or other public safety officers on bikes?
There’s no better way for law enforcement to get hands-on experience than policing from behind the handlebars. These officers can also manage crowds and congested campuses better, and for less money, than an outfitted cruiser.
YES NO Is there a program on campus to prevent bike theft?
Ensuring a safe and secure bicycling environment is essential to encouraging more students to choose the bicycle for trips rather than their car.

Evaluation

YES NO Is there an institutional plan or program to reduce bicyclist crashes?
From targeted enforcement to redesign of intersections with high crash rates, your campus should be striving for safer streets.
YES NO Does your college or university have a current comprehensive bicycle plan?
[Click here to see an example of the University of California, Berkeley’s Campus Bicycle Plan.]
YES NO Does your college or university have a bicycle program manager?
Along with the need for advocacy groups, the best bicycling campuses depend on staff to improve conditions for cycling through planning and implementation.
