ArizonaState Rank: 7 out of 50. Bronze Level State Snapshot: Arizona currently has seven designated Bicycle Friendly Communities helping create a really bike-culture throughout the state. This is represented by the multitude of cycling related events that happen annually; including the Arizona Governor’s Office of Safety sponsored El Tour de Phoenix. Estimates from the National Forest Service and the Arizona State Parks Department indicate that approximately 2,803 miles of the non-motorized natural surface trails are open to off-road cyclists. Also, it is ADOTs policy to include provisions for bicycle travel in all new major construction and major reconstruction projects on the state highway system. Most recent accomplishments: In the past year a number of significant activities were completed to improve bicycling in the State of Arizona. These include modification of ADOT Roadway Design Guidelines, development and expansion of educational programs dedicated to bicycle safety and awareness, and a 52% increase in League Certified Instructors in the state. . Despite the cold winter climate, the state boasts one of the highest percentages of bike commuters and most shared use paths in the country. To help educate the growing number of cyclists, the state has quadrupled the number of League Cycling Instructors in recent years. WashingtonState Rank: 1 out of 50. Silver Level State Snapshot: Washington has topped our annual Bicycle Friendly State ranking two years in a row, and scores consistently high in all categories. Bicycling is actively promoted as part of the Commute Trip Reduction plan in high density employment centers, as well as promoting bike tourism through state tourism board’s website. The WSDOT has worked with the Department of Health and the Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development in developing Washington's Active Community Environments Initiative (ACES), which promotes walking, bicycling, and the development of accessible recreation facilities. This initiative encourages environmental and policy interventions that will affect increased levels of physical activity and improved public health. Most recent accomplishments: Washington recently completed State Bicycle Facilities and Pedestrian Walkways Plan in addition to a Bicycle & Pedestrian Documentation Project which was a statewide benchmarking count. . WisconsinState Rank: 2 out of 50. Silver Level State Snapshot: The Department of Tourism's program Travel Green Wisconsin is the first of its kind green certification program for sustainable tourism businesses. Among many sustainable business practices, the certification encourages businesses to provide facilities for biking and bicycles for the use of their customers. To promote safe roadway use Wisconsin has been sending out a Rules of the Road flyer in all vehicle renewal mailings. Additionally, Wisconsin has developed a 2-day Pedestrian and Bicycle Law Enforcement Training course providing officers with up to date bicycle laws,common bicycle motor vehicle crashes and how they can reduce/eliminate them, update on crash investigation procedures and what additional information they can provide that will help improve the crash report, hands on training and a short bike ride to familiarize officers with the most common laws that are broken by both motorists and bicyclists on a first hand basis. Most recent accomplishments: During 2008 the WisDOT included Complete Streets language in it long-range transportation plan and took significant steps in ensuring improved compliance to the federal policy of incorporating bicycle accommodations.
