Bicycle Friendly CommunityThe Woodlands Township, TX | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: The Woodlands is a nationally and internationally recognized planned community that was developed with an emphasis on infrastructure that is supportive of outdoor physical activities and connectivity of communities via its park and pathway system. In addition to the 185 miles of bike/hike trails, it has 121 parks, 13 public pools, and 67 public tennis courts. On any given day of the week, and hour, a significant portion of the community is out exercising (i.e. street and pathway bicycling). And though The Woodlands Township is not an incorporated town or city and does not have the ability to pass bike parking ordinances, the planning philosophy of the community has always incorporated end of trip facilities including bike racks at all schools, parks, shopping centers, etc. Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: On average, The Woodlands develops up to five miles of new pathways each year. This is projected to continue for the next four to five years before build out of the community occurs. In addition, approximately $150,000 is budgeted per year to replace and update the pathway systems, markers and safety stenciling. |
