Bicycle Friendly CommunityWest Windsor, NJ | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: The Township of West Windsor has continuously demonstrated its commitment to bicyclists and pedestrians by appropriating capital funds on a yearly basis to incorporate multiple bicycle and pedestrian improvements throughout the Township. Approximately $300,000 is utilized on a yearly basis to achieve the Township's objectives related to bicycle and pedestrian improvements. The Township's Six-Year Capital Improvement Program contains projects including but not limited to bike lane extensions, dedicated bikeway paths, crosswalk improvements, and signal beacons. The community’s greatest asset is the active West Windsor Bicycle and Pedestrian Alliance, which currently comprised of over 400 members and has been working towards a more bicycle friendly West Windsor for six years. In addition to funding bicycle racks and Share the Road signs, the Alliance holds an annual Community Bike Ride, does outreach to teach community members of all ages how to bicycle safely, maintain their bikes, and shares bicycle routes with the community. The Alliance also works with the government to install more bicycle lanes and a bicycle friendly infrastructure. An indicator that the hard work by the City and the Alliance is paying off is the overwhelming success of West Windsor’s annual BikeFest, which has taken place in each of the last eight years. The event was established to encourage people to bicycle more, to get children excited to bike and to teach safe bicycling practices. Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: There is an S curve along busy Alexander Road leading into Princeton Township from West Windsor. This road did not have sidewalks or bike lanes although it leads to the historic Delaware and Raritan Canal Tow Path and Turning Basin Park in Princeton Township as well as a canoe rental site along the Canal. A project is just nearing completion that has added bike lanes and sidewalks along this stretch of road providing access to the recreational facilities from West Windsor. Most Compelling Community Statistic: West Windsor has a summer mountain biking camp for kids, which focuses on mountain biking techniques, as well as bicycle maintenance and safety, and a Bike and Hike camp, which covers topics such as bicycle safety, trail riding, and bicycle maintenance. |
