Bicycle Friendly CommunitiesVancouver, WA | Bronze Level
Encouragement: Programs like Vancouver’s Greenfleet Program encourages new cyclists by offering bicycles for people interested in trying it for the first time and reduced prices on Flexcars for bicyclists. The city has partnered with Portland to create a bicycle map that provides information for cyclists traveling on both sides of the Columbia River and has also partnered with Clark County to update and print a Clark County bicycle map. Vancouver has installed more than 50 bicycle racks throughout downtown, several of which offer bike pumps. Engineering: Vancouver will complete its third major arterial road diet in 2007, which will add a crucial 1.3 mile north/south link to the bicycle system. Vancouver has used blue bike lanes and sharrows in several locations. The city has more than 24 miles of shared use paths; continues to expand its on-street network of bike lanes with about three to five miles of bike lanes being added each year; and has begun to use bicycle loop detectors at signals. |
