Encouragement: For Bike to Work Week, events include an essay contest with bike giveaways, awards for a Bike Commuter of the Year, Most Improved Bicycle Community and Best Workplace That Fosters Bicycle Transportation. As many as 50,000 commuters participate in Bike to Work Day. Education: The city holds an annual Health and Safety Fair that features bicycle safety, including stunt riders, promotional materials, and prize giveaways. The local newspaper features a daily column on transportation issues. Sunnyvale publishes a free bicycle map with information targeted at both drivers and bicyclists. Engineering: Sunnyvale has conducted comprehensive, citywide planning and engineering for the completion of a bikeway network. This has resulted in the construction of more than 70 miles of new bike lanes in the past six years. |
