Bicycle Friendly CommunitiesSouth Windsor, CT | Bronze Level
Recent bicycling investment: South Windsor's most significant investment has been the financial support of the Elementary School (4th Grade) bicycle education program. The City provided both funding and volunteers to support Bike Walk CT instructors in providing 2 schools classroom and on-bike instruction. South Windsor is also sponsoring the development of a Family Bike Education Class. Bicycling highlights: The City is publishing a Share the Road document that will be sent to all households and businesses. South Windsor has built on infrastructure improvements that are making the town a safer place to bicycle. The City has increased the number of racks, started a bike rack cost share program, and dedicated its first bike lanes in the middle of town. South Windsor has hosted a regional transportation meeting, and its own committee presented at the 2011 Connecticut Bike Walk Summit at Yale University in November on how to become a Bicycle Friendly Community. Percentage of arterial streets with dedicated bicycle facilities: 9% Bicycling education in 40% elementary schools Signature cycling events: Tuesday night Rides, Pre-Concert Series Family bike rides, and a Family Bike Ride down historic Old Main Street during National Bike Month. Some coming bicycling improvements: South Windsor is planning to continue the installation of at least 15 new bicycle racks, conduct the 1st Bicycle Education class for families, support Safe Routes to School infrastructure improvements, make improvements to Chapel Road Bike Route to enhance the connectivity between East Coast Greenway, Charter Oak Greenway, and the Bissel Bridge Bike path leading to Hartford, develop full map to rate road routes, install up to 20 share the road signs throughout town, install sharrow loop on 7 miles of road, get bicycle education adopted by Board of Education, and work with the Town Council Bikeway committee to complete several neighborhood connectors. |
