Shawnee, KS | Bronze Level

Encouragement: Shawnee hosts a cyclocross event, Bike Rodeo, Tour De Shawneand Shawnee Skatepark, which allows bikes, is one of the nicest in the Midwest. The town also has a four-mile mountain bike trail. Enforcement: Shawnee was a pioneer community in putting public safety employees such as Fire Department personnel on bikes. This effort has greatly increased the ability of emergency response personnel to reach remote or hard to access areas.

Engineering: Shawnee has made significant investments toward the Bicycle and Recreational Trail Master Plan, including installing bike lanes on Rosehill Road from 55th Street to Johnson Drive (0.5 mile, $2,000,000) and Holiday Drive to I-435 to Locust (one mile, $4,400,000). Shawnee was the first city in the Greater Kansas Metropolitan Area to draft and adopt a bicycle transportation plan that incorporated both on-road and off-road bicycle facilities.
