Bicycle Friendly CommunitySedona, AZ | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: Sedona is a community world renowned for its spectacular mountain biking, as evidenced by their 37 miles of single track. A number of groups and individuals take part in the bicycling community through events and classes in Sedona, contributing to the safe and enjoyable cycling experience in the community. The West Sedona School bike club is led by a teacher who is a former professional bike racer and he instructs students on mountain bike riding technique and maintenance. The "BE A ROLL MODEL" campaign held in 2007 and 2009 calls awareness to the state law as it relates to cyclists and motorists. The Sedona Fire Department holds a bike rodeo every spring at a local public school to give out helmets. Volunteers from local bike shops are there to inspect and fix bikes and there are skill test events such as a pump track and mountain bike rides. The newly formed Sustainability Commission is in support of promoting cycling in the community. The intent of the group is to create a more "green" community which includes reducing automobile traffic, promoting a more healthy life style and encouraging commuter cycling. Compelling Accomplishment: In 2010, State Route 179-- that is one of two major arteries in Sedona-- was widened to include median strips, bike lanes and roundabouts. This project was completed in 2010. |
