Bicycle Friendly CommunitySanta Monica, CA| Bronze Level
Community Highlights: Santa Monica promotes a "Bike to School Day" and "Bike to Work Day" to encourage bicycling throughout the community. Additionally, an annual "Critical Mass" bike ride event is organized and promoted in the city. A Bicycle Valet service parks, safeguards, and retrieves bicycles for bicyclists at community events. It was first established at the Santa Monica Farmers' Market, and has since expanded to include the Thursday Night Summer Concert Series, and other special events. Most Compelling Community Statistic: Santa Monica has previously received and implemented state funding through Safe Routes to Schools, and has recently been programmed for a new $197,000 federal SRTS grant that provides for the coordination of education, outreach, evaluation, and documentation of pedestrian and bicycle programs for all of the city's middle schools, and 2 out of the 8 elementary schools. The goal of the program is to ensure that any educational efforts are easily replicable for all of the city's elementary school. |
