Bicycle Friendly CommunitySanibel, FL| Bronze Level
Community Highlights: The island’s shared use path system, often called the “Jewel of the Island,” started in 1975, currently measures 26 miles, and is still expanding. The network offers residents and visitors, from young children to grandparents, a safe and easy way to get around the island and is an integral part of Sanibel's small town character, connecting residents and visitors to each other, the shops and services, and the natural environment. Sanibel hosts many bicycle related events from rides, to parades to educational programs. The annual New Year’s Day morning ride departs from Sanibel Community Park over the Bridge to the Mainland and back, followed by coffee and donuts. A Bicycle Rodeo is held annually, providing bicycle safety training opportunities for kids of all ages. In addition, The Sanibel Police Department assists the Sanibel School in bike safety programs. The Sanibel Bicycle Club placed plastic license plates with bike safety "rules of the road" on most bike racks and on the inside of many rental bike baskets. |
