Bicycle Friendly CommunitiesSan Jose, CA | Bronze Level
Engineering: San Jose invested $1.4 million in the River Oaks Bicyclist & Pedestrian Bridge in north San Jose. This project was completed and opened to the public in May 2006. The bridge provides bicyclist and pedestrian access across the Guadalupe River. Before the bridge was completed, to cross the river, bicyclists and pedestrians were forced to take long detours on major arterials heavily traveled by motorists (1.5 mile detour to the south and 4.5 mile detour to the north). The city boasts more than 200 miles of existing bikeways, plus an additional 150 miles planned for the future. |
