Bicycle Friendly Community

San Antonio | Bronze Level

Community Highlights: The Bicycle Master Plan Update and Implementation Plan is working to make San Antonio’s bike network connected, direct, and accessible and set mandates and benchmarks for short and long term planning of infrastructure, policy, funding, and staffing. The city passed two local ordinances that will form the basis of an educational campaign: "Safe Passing" for vulnerable road users, and the requirement for proper lighting when riding a bicycle at night. These will be reinforced by a safety and awareness campaign called "Get Cyched." This campaign aims to educate both motorists and cyclists and increase tolerance for sustainable forms of transportation. This safety campaign is supplemented by new signage downtown that points out bicycle parking and that "Bikes May Use Full Lane." The city of San Antonio established an interactive GIS-based website to allow users to see existing bicycle facilities in relation to streets and landmarks and create customized maps. The San Antonio-Bexar County MPO in partnership with the City of San Antonio has held an annual "Walk and Roll Fest" each May for the past 13 years. San Antonio hosted a Bicycle Friendly Community "summit" for elected officials, staff, and community leaders to learn about bicycle-friendly features of San Antonio.
