Bicycle Friendly CommunitySalt Lake City, UT | Silver Level
Community Highlights: Salt Lake City has 79 miles of bicycle lanes, adding 19 miles in 2009, and installed an experimental shared lane treatment on one major street with sharrows, Bicycle May Use Full Lane signs, and a four-foot-wide green pavement centered in outside travel lanes. The city plans to add this same treatment on Main Street in 2010. City Council is converting the 2007 Complete Streets Policy into a City Ordinance and hosted its first bicycle summit in 2009. The Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective offers refurbished bicycles and educational programs to youth and low-income residents. The City received Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant funds for a Bicycle Transit Center at the downtown intermodal hub. It will be constructed with the Utah Transit Authority and will add secure bicycle parking to light rail, commuter rail, bus, and car-sharing hub. All transit services in the city permit bicycles on board at all hours. |
