Bicycle Friendly CommunityRidgeland, MS | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: The City of Ridgeland offers a premier bike trail system that traverses the city and travels through national park lands. It is well maintained and very popular with local residents and visitors. Community involvement and leadership show an enthusiasm for bicycling that is unsurpassed in the area. The Police Department participates in the Bike Rodeo where helmet fitting and bike safety as well as bicycling rules and skills are taught. Bicycle safety information and routine local activities are inserted in utility bills every quarter. Newsletters are also used to promote bicycling using photos, interviews and articles. Press conferences, press releases and promotional materials and maps make use of local media to promote bicycling in Ridgeland. Bicycle safety material is also located on Ridgeland's website, local bike shops, in the tourism brochure and at the public library. Bike safety DVDs are given to local public and private schools to be shown to the driver education students. Ridgeland has a number of programs to encourage bicycling such as the recycle-a-bike program that also teaches community members about bike safety and maintenance. |
