Bicycle Friendly CommunitiesRedmond, WA | Silver Level
Community Highlights: Redmond invests in bicycling as a fundamental value of the community. As the self-proclaimed Bicycle Capitol of the Northwest, citizens and leaders support, invest in, and encourage bicycling as both a means of transportation and recreation. The City’s combination of infrastructure and community events is an important part of life in Redmond. The City believes that bicycling creates increased awareness, support and ownership of sustainable efforts, and environmental protection; healthier and more independent lives as a result of greater and healthier choices; a more caring, supportive community; a more vibrant, diverse and healthy economy; and better, more efficient use of resources less is more. Bicycles are also considered an important mode of transportation, as evidenced by integrated planning which ensures and requires high quality bicycle facilities from long range plan concepts to implementation, allowing Redmond to create an extensive high quality network of bicycle facilities, which reaches all portions of the city. Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: The City purchased four miles of former railroad right of way at a cost of $10 million to build a regional trail that will connect with more than 60 miles of other regional trails. In addition, the City completed a master plan for this trail, the Redmond Central Connector, and received state and federal funding to match local contributions to build the first mile of this trail in 2012. |
