Bicycle Friendly CommunityPittsburgh, PA | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: Mayor Ravensthal's Bicycle and Pedestrian Initiatives provide a framework for Pittsburgh to enhance its bicycle friendliness. The Bicycle Route and Signage Strategic Plan is the first phase of a three phase project that will culminate in the installation of a comprehensive way-finding sign network. The Strategic Plan will also provide a prioritized installation program and outline projected costs for the network materials, installation and maintenance. The network will encourage Pittsburgh residents and visitors to bike on the City's riverfront trails, to its world class regional parks system and to the City's extensive cultural and recreation amenities. The city has a number of funding sources for bicycle projects. R. K Mellon has donated money for a bike coordinator position and the Heinz Endowments has contributed $135,000 for development of the City's Bicycle/Pedestrian Plan. BikePGH, a bicycle advocacy group in Pittsburgh, has had an immeasurable impact on cycling in the area. Since its inception in 2002, BikePGH has consistently spearheaded significant changes to the City's transportation system that have greatly enhanced the City's quality of life. The Car Free Fridays program encourages city and regional residents to leave their cars home on Fridays. The bicycle co-op Free Ride offers several educational programs and opportunities to underserved communities. |
