Bicycle Friendly CommunitiesMesa, AZ | Bronze Level
Engineering: A bicycle bridge was constructed to allow passage between the Mesa and Chandler, which cost more than $100,000 to construct. Mesa has defined three bicycle networks. The arterial street network (identified with pavement markings for bicycle lanes and signing), the mid-section collector street network (identified primarily as bicycle routes with some lane markings and signs), and the irrigation canal and power easement trail network identified with signing. There are many gaps within each of these networks, but Mesa is participating in an exhaustive study with the Regional Council to identify all gaps and to adopt a plan for the completion and connection of all the gaps. The study will also provide a plan for the connection of bicycle networks between all of the communities in the region. Mesa has added nine miles of roadway bike lanes since 2003.
