Bicycle Friendly Community

Menlo Park, CA | Bronze Level

Community Highlights: Four bicycle related studies were approved and funded by Menlo Park City Council for the past fiscal year. This included a Bike Lane Mitigation Study, a Bike Lane Feasibility Study identifying streets that may support a bike lane with the change in lane widths and parking, a School Trip Reduction Study to develop a tool kit for different methods of reducing individual trips to school and a final study to develop alternatives to improve the safety along the section of Sand Hill Road. Menlo Park has a Safe Routes to School program at almost every school in the city, resulting in infrastructure improvements such as separated asphalt walkways, lighted crosswalks and curb ramps. The Wayfinding signs program identifies destinations within the city such as a library, Train Station, city hall and bike bridges.
The Annual Bicycle Commissioners Ride is organized to inform new commissioners of some of the city's current cycling issue locations. It also provides an opportunity to view and make concrete many of the items that the commission has discussed in past meetings. The meeting entails several locations refelecting recent bicycle commission actions and concerns. Menlo Park Green Ribbon Citizens' Committee promotes National Bike Month with the Drive Less Challenge. There were 91 participants that totaled 11,711 green miles during the drive less challenge.
