Bicycle Friendly Community

Los Altos, CA | Bronze Level

Community Highlights: Los Altos has recently completed a number of infrastructure projects including completion of the Adobe Creek Pedestrian and Bike Bridge replacement, Los Altos Ave Bicycle Lane, and Bike Signage for all Class II/III routes.  They have also widened their network with 10 miles of bike lanes. The City of Los Altos has funded $30,000 in their fiscal 2010/2011 budget for bicycle education in the public elementary and junior high schools. The program is just rolling out but expected to be in 100% of the public schools by the end of 2011. At walk/bike to school day events, the police department provides escort and visibility assistance. All public elementary and junior high schools have city prepared "Suggested Routes to School" maps that are made available on each school's web site. Los Altos is also working with the neighboring communities of Sunnyvale and Cupertino to improve connectivity of shared paths.
