Bicycle Friendly CommunityLexington-Fayette CO., KY | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: Lexinton-Fayette County has made significant investments in bicycling through planning and engineering as well as promotion and education. Recently, the county developed a Bike & Pedestrian Master Plan, spent $2 million in local funds for trail and development, and installed bike lanes on several major arterial streets. Lexington has also experienced a surge in local bike culture and a growing number of activities to promote bicycling, including a bike sharing program. The community also has a program called Shifting Gears which connects local refugees with bicycles. Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: During 2007, the county government hosted a Bike Summit, adopted their first Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan, and secured more than $7 million in local, state, and federal funding for bike facilities. Best Result of Designation: The Bicycle Friendly Community Award has elevated bicycling in the eyes of the press, the public and local officials and has increased awareness of bicycling needs and improvements. |
