Bicycle Friendly CommunityLawrence, KS | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: Lawrence dedicates May as Bicycle Awareness Month and focuses on educating all road users about bicycle regulations and safety. The city educates drivers and cyclists on the etiquette of sharing the road through real-life demonstrations, teaches hand signals, and distributes brochures. Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: The city of Lawrence has secured a grant to build a 1.65 mile trail in an abandoned rail corridor that will be part of the Burroughs Creek Trail and Linear Park. The city also voted to approve a sales tax proposal in which a portion of the revenue provides dedicated funding for the completion of the Burroughs Creek rail-trail project in eastern Lawrence matching the state grant. According to the 2007 American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau, 2.3 percent of the workers in Lawrence regularly commute to work on bicycle—almost six times the national average! |
