Bicycle Friendly CommunityJuneau, AK | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: In the last year, the city has constructed three pedestrian/bicycle only bridges, two of which create new links in the non-motorized transportation system. These bridges are part of Juneau’s well-connected bicycle network including 88 miles of bike lanes and 19 miles of shared-use path. The city recently adopted the 2009 Non-Motorized Transportation Plan (NMTP) as an addendum to the Comprehensive Plan to put new pressure on DOT to improve bicycle facilities in the area. Juneau is also in the planning process and about to implement a Safe Routes to School programs at all elementary and middle schools. City staff are working with Health & Wellness Coordinators at major employers, Parks & Recreation staff, State Department of Transportation staff, the School District, and other interested agencies to hold a Traffic Skills 101 class, one or more bike rodeos, and a commuter safety class. Compelling Statistic: The city performed National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project during the Winter 2011 count period. Even though the weather at the time was horrible-- single-digit temperatures and winds up to 88 mph, resulting in wind-chill temps as low as -50 F-- every count location had two or more bicyclists during every two hour count period. |
