Bicycle Friendly CommunityGresham, OR | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: Seventy-five percent of Gresham’s arterials/boulevards have bicycle lanes that provide alternatives for cyclists while also connecting to Portland’s metro regional bicycle system. Through grants, regular maintenance programs, and Capital Improvement Programs in the region, the City is achieving its goal to provide a seamless transportation network that links multiple modes across jurisdictional boundaries. The Region 2040 Growth Concept map categorizes the Gresham Fairview Trail as a multi-use path, linking neighborhoods to mixed-use employment and industrial centers, as well as providing linkages to the Gresham Regional Center, the Gresham Civic Neighborhood (a transit oriented development) and the Rockwood Town Center. The City of Gresham hosts an annual Transportation Safety Fair where they will provide approximately 500 helmets to children and adults and discusses safety topics. This year the City hosted its first Commuting 101 workshop taught by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA). Metro, the Portland regional planning organization, offers educational opportunities through its Share the Road Safety Class offered to motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians, educating citizens on specific laws related to bicycle and pedestrian safety. Recent Accomplishment: The City is currently constructing phases two and three of the Gresham Fairview Trail. This section of the trail is approximately 2 miles in length and includes a bridge which will cross an arterial roadway. The city also installed 114 wayfinding signs and removed on-street car parking from various sections on two arterial roads to replace them with bicycle lanes. |
