Community Highlights: For the past 4 years, the City of Greenville has celebrated Bike to Work Week with bicycle focused events and community rides with the city officials. During this weeklong car-free celebration, participants are rewarded with free breakfast, bike safety checks, custom water bottles, bicycle education info, rear blinky lights, safety vests, and other commuting oriented equipment. In addition to the City's Complete Streets Policy, the City's Engineering Design and Specifications Manual requires bicycle lanes on every new Collector and Arterial roadway construction project. This policy is for both private and public roadway construction projects. Education efforts have included regular classes for adults and in-school for kids. Several local schools organize Walk and Bike to School Day each year. Safe Kids Upstate partnered with George Hincapie and produced a 30-second "Helmet Safety" PSA. This PSA is shown on local TV and is used at various Safe Most Recent Significant Accomplishment: The recent completion of a 2-mile, $2 million paved greenway trail along the Reedy River corridor is a milestone for the city of Greenville. Additionally, City Council appropriated $225,000 in Capital Improvement money for city-wide on-street bicycle infrastructure and facility improvements. Current Activities to Promote Bicycling: Greenville annually celebrates Bike Month and Bike-to-Work Day with multiple events. The city hosts the US Pro Cycling Championships and other road racing events, frequent charity group rides, weekly organized group road rides, and SORBA (Southern Off Road Biking Association) sponsored events.
