Bicycle Friendly CommunityGreensboro, NC | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: Education and encouragement of bicycling have been at the center of Greensboro's bicycle-friendly efforts. The City dedicated October 2007 and September 2008 as Bicycle Safety Months. Local partners included TV and radio, with interviews, PSA's, ads and events. A dedicated website on sharing the road with a specific section dedicated to motorists was created as part of the campaign. The Share the Road billboard picture has also been continuously installed on the sides of at least 10 GTA buses since October 2007 and 8 GTA buses are carrying the Coexist banner on the backs. A bicycle educational program is taught in the 4th grade, with some schools hosting bike rodeos. First grade students are given the opportunity to attend Safety Town offered through Greensboro Police Department during the summer. Most Recent Significant Accomplishment: A road diet was done on one of the primary routes leading into downtown. The four lane section of the road was converted after resurfacing into a three lane section with bike lanes. It now flows into a section that has been "calmed" with stamped chicanes. Current Activities to Support Bicycling: Numerous bicycling activities are held in the community each year. The Mayor issued a proclamation declaring May as Bike Month and encouraging the citizens of Greensboro to bicycle more often. |
