Bicycle Friendly CommunityFresno, CA | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: Fresno has over 164 miles of existing Class I, Class II, and Class III bikeways and plan to have over 900 miles of bikeways in the future. Fresno has five pedestrian- and bicycle-only bridges that cross each of Fresno's freeways. In addition to engineering expansions, the Fire Department promotes bicycle education bygiving a helmet to any child they see bicycling, rollerblading, or skateboarding without one. The Fire Department ensures that helmets are given in the proper size and that children know how to wear it correctly. National Bike Month events in Fresno include the Million Mile Challenge, where the people of the Fresno area attempt to ride one million miles by logging miles on a web page odometer, the Bike to Work Corporate Challenge, Bike to School Fridays, and the Mall-to-Mall ride. The City owns and operates several mountain bike and BMX facilities. These facilities are all open year-round, the public can access them free of charge, and terrain is available for all abilities of bicyclists. Most Recent Bicycle-Related Accomplishment: The Fresno City Council approved the 2010 Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Trails Master Plan in November 2010; it cost over $400,000 and focuses on each of the Five E's. Over the past year, Fresno has installed three miles of Class I bike paths, 30 miles of Class II bike lanes, and one grade-separated path crossing. They also opened the Fulton Pedestrian Mall to bicycles. . |
