Bicycle Friendly CommunityDayton, OH | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: The City of Dayton and the Greater Dayton Region hosts one of the best shared-use trail systems in the nation. With 30 miles of available trails, every citizen of Dayton is within a 5-10 minute ride from a trail, providing 100 percent access to every corner of the city plus the remaining 240 miles of regional trails. They have recently completed the region’s first bike hub in downtown Dayton, adding to the City’s collection of existing bicycle facilities such as the Madden BMX course and MoMBA mountain bike park. The City continues to work with its regional partners, including Five Rivers Metroparks, Miami Conservancy District, MVRPC (MPO), neighboring jurisdictions, and numerous community groups, to develop infrastructure and promote bicycling as a viable alternative to motorized transportation. The City of Dayton has a rich history of bicycling culture, beginning with the Wright Brothers first bicycle rental and repair shop in West Dayton in 1892. Most Significant Bicycle-Related Statistic: The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (local MPO) conducted a Trail User Survey in 2009 that included a region-wide economic impact analysis of regional shared-use recreational trail system. The study found that, region-wide, the recreational trails generate between $13.5 and $14.9 million in yearly economic impact. Photos 2 & 3 - Elzora.com Photography |
