Bicycle City

Bicycle Friendly Community

Davidson, NC | Bronze Level

Community Highlights: The Town holds a very transparent and open process for citizen input into all infrastructure decisions, including the prioritization of bike facility construction. The Town of Davidson has been recognized nationally with EPA’s Overall Excellence in Smart Growth Award for being a leader in smart growth, including its complete streets policies and well-connected bicycle networks. Davidson requires narrow neighborhood streets with safe bicycle accommodations, high levels of street connectivity, and greenway construction, all within a mixed-use and compact building environment to allow for walkable and bikeable distances to local services, goods and destinations. A wide range of user groups have been consulted when looking for ways to make cycling more accessible and safe for the whole population - including seniors (via the Aging in Place Task Force), youth (via the Davidson Walks and Rolls program), college students, and recreational cyclists. The entire Davidson community works hard to protect cyclists' interests and safety. The Town works primarily through policy tools to create safe bicycle infrastructure. All Town departments support and encourage cycling in their programs. Local and regional cyclists and staff communicate well to maintain a sense that cyclists are welcome. Recreation clubs actively promote cycling events locally and regionally, bringing thousands of cyclists to the area every year.
