Bicycle Friendly CommunityCupertino, CA | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: Cupertino provides a highly connected bicycle network including 26 miles of bike lanes, 9 miles of signed bike route, and a number of bicycle boulevards. The city prioritizes bicycle education to their youth with a Safe Routes to School program at all elementary, middle and high schools in addition to bike rodeos and helmet fittings. They also offer a diversion program for citations received by bike offenders under the age of 18. The class, which enables a citation to be dismissed, is also envisioned as a chance to educate youth bike offenders regarding their biking infraction. Several schools in the city use a technology called Boltage that measures how many students walk and bike to school. The Boltage system uses a machine called "the zap", a solar-powered radio frequency identification reader. This can track the number of children walking to school and helps create an incentive program for students and classrooms. The City of Cupertino offers a pool of bicycles for use by City employees going out in the field or to meetings outside of City Hall. Most Recent Bicycle-Related Accomplishment: Cupertino recently finished construction of the Mary Avenue Bicycle Footbridge, which is a cable-stayed bicycle/pedestrian bridge over Highway 280 connecting the communities of Cupertino and Sunnyvale. |
