Bicycle Friendly Community

Corvallis, OR | Gold Level

Community Highlights: Biking is a way of life in Corvallis – the community has a 19 percent bicycle mode share according to the latest citizen survey, the highest in Oregon. The realization that cycling is critical to the livability of Corvallis and its quality of life has permeated all agencies in the community. Commitment is demonstrated through the individual and collaborative efforts of local government, the Corvallis School Districts, the Corvallis Police Department, the Public Health Department, the Sustainable Corvallis Coalition (a grass roots citizen-led group), Oregon State University and the city's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission. This institutionalization is evidenced by the bicycle facility network and the number and diversity of education, enforcement and encouragement programs in the community. For example, the Intermodal Transit Mall, complete with bike racks and bike storage lockers, is a model for other communities.

Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: Corvallis installed four solar powered, user activated bike/ped flashing signal crossings, which address safety and access issues. The Town also increased bike parking near a park/skatepark and Farmer's Market location (20 new hoops), and added an on-street bike corral with 12 hoops and six lockers at a transit center. Corvallis also implemented some Safe Route to School projects, which included the construction of four covered bike parking areas, complete with 40 new hoops, at two elementary schools.

Most Compelling Community Statistic: Corvallis boasts bike lanes on 98% of all arterial and collector streets, and has an interconnected network of bikelanes, sharrows and multiuse trails.
