Bicycle Friendly CommunityConcord, NH | Bronze Level
Community Highlights: National Bike to Work Week, also known as Green Commute Week in Concord, has resulted in a large and growing following of residents and commuters from around the city. Each day is dedicated to a different green travel mode with commuter breakfasts and lunchtime events. Residents are encouraged to enter a 6-week Commuter Challenge and log their mileage in order to be entered into drawings for prizes donated by local merchants. A major part of this event includes organized bicycle commute rides to Concord each morning. The Program for Alternative Transportation and Health (PATH) is a central New Hampshire based program that works with local employers to develop commuter incentive programs and commuter challenges to encourage residents to carpool, bicycle, walk, and take public transportation. PATH has worked with a local bicycle shop and volunteers to supply donated used bicycles, helmets, and bicycle education material to people of lesser means and less access to transportation options. Safety education classes covering basic rules of the road for bicyclists and basic bicycle repair are offered at no charge to these groups. Recent Accomplishements: Concord reconstructed the primary arterial connecting downtown, transforming it into a complete street. Concord’s 2030 Master Plan has specific emphasis on bicycle issues, including bike accommodations, facilities, and safety. |
