Bicycle City

Bicycle Friendly Community

Columbus, OH | Bronze Level

Community Highlights: Columbus celebrates Bike Month with a Corporate Challenge to promote bicycle commuting. In 2009, the city had 110 businesses and organizations participating with 1279 commuters who rode over 34,000 miles! Bike to Work Day is also celebrated throughout the city with commuter lunch and awards. The city finalized their Bicentennial Bikeway Plan in May 2009 - it is a 20 year plan for improvements to the on-street bike routes and off-street bikeways in Columbus. The Plan will improve and expand their already extensive 50 mile bicycle hard surface network of trails and includes components of four of the five E's: Engineering, Education, Encouragement and Enforcement.

Most Compelling Community Statistic: The City of Columbus and Columbus Metroparks host a Bicycle Safety Festival at six neighborhood locations each year as part of the Neighborhood Pride program. The Bicycle Safety Festival teaches 2500-3000 children at the schools in these neighborhoods each year and helmets are provided to each child.
