Bicycle Friendly Community

Chattanooga, TN | Bronze Level

Community Highlights: Chattanooga is striving to holistically improve the quality of life in their community by promoting bicycling through a wide array of creative and diverse projects, funding, and partnerships. Through the development, adoption and implementation of a Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, the needs of bicyclists are being integrated throughout the planning and funding process to remove the barriers to freedom of choice in transportation and provide for a wide variety of recreational opportunities. Chattanooga also hosted the 2010 ProWalk/ProBike Conference and the American Trails National Trail Symposium.

Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: Outdoor Chattanooga is coordinating the implementation of a public bicycle share system to service downtown Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in partnership with the regional transit authority CARTA. This program is being developed through a mix of investments. The bike share program is an important new tool to change the mobility dynamic and will keep bicycling and an outdoor lifestyle at the forefront of public thought and investment.

Most Compelling Community Statistic: Data collection documents a 320 percent increase in cyclists at the Walnut Street Bridge since 2005.
