Bicycle Friendly CommunityCarrboro, NC | Silver Level
Engineering: Since the early 1970s, Carrboro has considered bicycles in all parts of its planning, and the result is a comprehensive bikeway system. Over the past 25 years, Carrboro has utilized its bonding authority to develop bike lanes and bike ways, has worked cooperatively to include bike lanes in all state road improvement projects, and has amended its street standards to include bike lanes as a requirement on all collector roads. Carrboro has adopted a comprehensive master plan for recreation and parks that includes miles of multi-use paved trails and $1.45 million budgeted over the next five years to fund approximately four miles of trails. There are currently 22 miles of bike lanes, and wide shoulders are provided in town. In addition, 2.25 miles of off-road bikeways have been provided through public and private expenditures. A 2005 Mobility Report Card revealed that bicycle activity increased 25 percent between 2003 and 2005 at 16 locations surveyed in town. Carrboro was one of the first communities in North Carolina to develop and implement a residential traffic-calming program.
