Bicycle Friendly CommunityBloomington, IN | Silver Level
Encouragement: In 2006, 30 bike racks were purchased and installed throughout downtown, and the city’s bike map was freely distributed to local bike shops, cycling organizations, students, and more. Bloomington’s new zoning ordinance will strengthen requirements for bicycle parking, requiring some larger developments to install Class I bicycle facilities. The city also organizes several events in recognition of Bike Week, including youth and adult cycling education programs, a Bike-to-Work day, and other events. Engineering: This year, as in every year since 2001, Bloomington earmarked $500,000 from the annual budget to implement infrastructure projects from the Alternative Transportation and Greenways System Plan (ATGSP). In addition to creating and maintaining bike lanes, sidepaths, multi-use trails, and connector paths, the city recently invested in 250 bike route signs, which will help cyclists to avoid dangerous streets, while increasing awareness amongst motorists. Bloomington also works with developers to ensure that new developments facilitate connections to the bicycle network. |
