Bicycle Friendly Community

Anchorage, AK | Bronze Level

Community Highlights: Education is at the core of creating a bicycle-friendly Anchorage. The city was able to provide bike education kits to all the Anchorage School District elemetary and charter schools (70 in all) to train children on bicycling education. These kits included horns, helmets, brochures; teachers include this in their curriculum in the spring and fall. Alaska Injury and Prevention Center runs spring bicycle rodeos at 10 schools. Local advocates such as the Bicycle Commuters of Anchorage are key to these education and promotion programs, offering a course called Bike Commuting 101 and delivering the Alaska Bike Summit.

Most Recent Significant Accomplishment: Anchorage has recently completed its first Bicycle Plan. The public response to this plan (still in draft stage) has been tremendous and support is widespread. It has really helped to increase acknowledgement of bicycling as a form of transportation in Anchorage.

Current Activities to Support Bicycling: Bicycle Commuters of Anchorage (BCA) is a local advocacy group, which recenty organized the Alaska Bike Summit. This group also conducts bicycle clinics, bike breakfasts, and features valet bicycle parking at local festivals and events.
