Frequently Asked Questions

When is the deadline to apply?

The next deadline for applications is February 5, 2013.

Why is important for colleges & universities to be bicycle-friendly?

The Bicycle Friendly University program is a great way to promote an active, sustainable and more livable college campus. A BFU enhances mobility around campus — increasing the amount of biking for transportation, exercise, recreation, and sport. Students and employees are more likely to bike where they are welcomed and accommodated, as it is noticeably safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable. Getting more people on bikes has environmental, economic and health benefits for both students and the institution as a whole. For example, with fewer short distance car trips made by students, carbon emissions will be lower and congestion relieved. The university will also save money and space on a decreased demand for vehicular parking. A BFU's increased bicycle accommodations will promote a more active community, so students can exercise while getting to class.

Great thing happen when building a bicycle friendly campus:

  • Improve campus connectivity
  • Reduce carbon footprint and congestion
  • Lower health care and parking costs
  • Happier and healthier students and staff
  • Enhance campus quality of life
  • Become a model for the rest of the country
  • What does a bicycle-friendly campus look like?

A bicycle-friendly campus welcomes bicycling. The best bicycling colleges and universities are comprehensive in incorporating elements from all Five Es: Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, and Evaluation & Planning. It is an environment that welcomes cyclists of all skill levels, to ride safely and comfortably. For example, a Bicycle Friendly University may provide a comprehensive network of bike lanes and paths, an easily accessible bike share program, commuter classes for incoming students and staff, plentiful bike racks or special events to promote biking. The BFU application and resources page take the variables of location, school type and student population into account by providing a comprehensive guide to creating a bicycle friendly campus.

How can I make my college/ university more bicycle friendly?

There are many things that can be done right away. The BFU program provides a roadmap to bicycle-friendliness from the smallest projects to world-class programs. Check out the resources page for an abundance of information and links to point you in the right direction. This page, as well as the application, is divided into the Five Es we use as criterion to measure bike friendliness. Within each category, there is a range of innovative ideas and best practices. Fill out the BFU scorecard to get a quick assessment of the institution. We encourage collaboration between campus bicycling groups, administration, students and staff to prepare and submit the BFU application. You can begin with small investments such as increasing signage and promotional material, while planning for larger changes in infrastructure. Every BFU applicant receives detailed feedback and assistance.

What are the benefits of being a BFU?

Perhaps, most importantly, a Bicycle Friendly University designation serves as a positive indication for current and prospective students as well as faculty and staff. This designation reflects a positive environment in which to live, study and work. Bicycles provide a simple solution to many of the complex problems that institutions face, including issues around mobility, space, health, and economics. The application itself also serves as an educational tool. The process of thoroughly going through the application, answering the questions and reading the provided resources will be insightful as to the opportunities and possibilities that exist for incorporating bicycles.

Is there an application or renewal fee?

No. Thanks to the generous support of the Bikes Belong Coalition and Trek Bicycle we are able to waive all application and renewal fees.

How many years is the designation applicable?

The BFU designation is given on a four year basis, after which time the institution must reapply to maintain or improve their status. Colleges and Universities that do not maintain their cycling environment over the years may also lose their BFU status.

How does the application process work?

The applicant will fill out an online application and submit when completed. The application is reviewed by a committee selected to provide both a local and national perspective. If awarded, a designation of Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum will be made. An award certificate, BFU pennant and two Bicycle Friendly University road signs will be sent to the awarded institutions.

Each school that applies will receive a detailed feedback report to aid in improvement.

    Who should apply?

Any university, college, community college or other institution of higher education with a physical campus is eligible to apply for the BFU program. Your bicycle, sustainability, or transportation program manager should review the application and resources.
