University Highlights: The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is a scenic campus situated in the heart of the state, less than two miles west of downtown Greensboro. The current campus is less than one-third square mile, surrounded by historic residential neighborhoods and established retail districts. Student life at UNCG offers many opportunities for off-campus recreation, shopping, housing, and on-campus destinations that are all within comfortable biking distance. Thanks to the age of the campus and surrounding neighborhoods, UNCG sits within a traditional, gridded street system with many parallel local streets. These neighborhood streets are relatively bike-friendly and comfortable for bicyclists of varying skill levels and generally provide cyclists with many alternative parallel routes to busier roadways. UNCG developed a Bicycle Master Plan (BMP) to identify safe bicycle routes and facilities where bicyclists of varying skill levels feel comfortable riding their bikes; to create an inter-connected network of bicycle facilities including marked bike lanes and off-road trails that allow for access to all destinations on campus; to develop bicyclist-friendly amenities that will make bicycling an easy and convenient mode choice and incentivize bicycling in small ways to promote cycling as a viable commuter choice; to educate bicyclists and motorists alike about the benefits of safe bicycling by distributing informational pamphlets, engaging staff and students in campus-wide bicycle safety programs and hosting University-sponsored bicycling activities (e.g. “Bike to Work Week” event); and to maintain the visual appeal and appearance of the campus, while also providing effective bicycling facilities. As implementation continues, the progress made towards achieving the goals of the BMP shows that the university considers bicycles an important priority for the campus.

UNCG recently spent more than $50,000 to improve campus bike parking infrastructure.

Most Compelling Fact: The UNCG PD has recently initiated a Traffic Safety Task Force to determine community objectives, facilitate public participation, identify & prioritize locations needing improvement, evaluate and determine solutions, and implement a long-term comprehensive traffic safety plan at UNCG.
