Bicycle Friendly University

University of Maryland, College Park| Bronze Level

University Highlights: The University of Maryland College Park Department of Transportation Services collaborated with the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Resident Life, Campus Recreation Services, and Facilities Management (Physical Plant) to fund a Bicycle Master Plan that was completed by Toole Design Group. This significant collaborative investment has created broad-ranging changes in the way that the university deals with bicycling. The University is currently building what may be the largest bicycle parking lot in the state of Maryland. The parking lot will be under cover and will have a dismount lane, new, vandal-resistant fluorescent lighting, new vandal-resistant mega-pixel CCTV cameras and parking for somewhere between 60-100 bicycles. This sets a huge precedent for future centralized, safer bicycle parking. In addition, the entire campus is limited to 20 mph which makes this an ideal place for young adults to learn to ride in the roadways.

Most Compelling Recent Bike Related Accomplishment:
The Department of Transportation Services created and funded a paid-position for a Bicycle Coordinator.

Most Compelling Fact:At the beginning of each Fall semester, University staff manually count bikes/scooters, males/females, road/sidewalk, and helmet/no helmet on two days for seven hours at 10 designated locations on campus.
