Bicycle Friendly UniversityUniversity of California, Los Angeles| Bronze Level
University Highlights: Despite fiscal constraints, The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has found innovative ways to continue to support bicycling through various partnerships. The Bruin Bikes Program, for example, is an effort to make bicycles more available for UCLA students and employees. With more bicycles available, more bicycles are on the road, and are more visible to motorists, increasing safety overall for bicyclists. UCLA’s Bruin Bikes Program allows employees to use a bike to run errands on campus, rather than use a departmental motor-vehicle, increasing campus sustainability and employee wellness. The adoption of the 2006 Bicycle Master Plan (BMP) signified that bicycles and bicyclists are an integral part of the campus community. With the adoption of the BMP, the campus set forth the first official policy of recommendations to help support and grow bicycling on campus. The BMP set forth infrastructure recommendations related to parking, and bikeway, and marketing efforts to encourage bicycling. Since the adoption of the BMP, accommodating bicyclists remains a priority related to new campus construction, and addressing changing bicyclist needs. Most Compelling Recent Bike Related Accomplishment: Most Compelling Fact:In 2010, UCLA Transportation's Marketing Team, in partnership with the UCLA Sustainable Resource Center filmed the 'UCLA Bike-U-Mentary'. The short film is a documentary that follows two campus cyclists on their commute to UCLA through city traffic. The short film was distributed through various campus media channels and was well received by the campus community. Among various accolades, the UCLA Bike-U-Mentary won Metro's 2010 Diamond Rideshare Marketing award, as well as Best Short Doc at the 2010 LA film and Script Festival. |
