Bicycle Friendly UniversityIndiana University, Bloomington| Bronze Level
University Highlights: A green movement is erupting all throughout Indiana University, and students, faculty and staff are beginning to adapt their lifestyles to reduce their carbon footprint. With the creation of a comprehensive bike plan and a defined direction of change for the university in place, the University believes that it is only a matter of time before more students and faculty leave their cars for bicycles. An increasing number of faculty and students are dedicating their efforts to researching bike use, inventory of facilities, and predicted demand with increased facilities. The biggest bicycle event of the year is the Little 500, a bike race where students compete in relay-style 50-mile race in the Armstrong Stadium of the Bloomington Campus. Since its inception in 1951, the race has encouraged participants to train year-round. The race draws nearly 18,000 fans each spring, making it one of the most anticipated events of the year. Profits generated provide scholarships for working IU students. Preceding the race, a series of bike events including qualifications, and Miss-N-Out take place around campus to scope out competition, and to enjoy more racing opportunities. Indiana University is widely known for this fun, and philanthropic event, and gained increasing media attention over the years. The community surrounding campus also takes pride in the Hilly Hundred, one of the longest running and largest bicycle events in the state. The three day trip includes 50 miles each day, and is supplemented with live entertainment, scenic views, and a friendly, non-competitive environment.
