Bicycle Friendly UniversityGeorge Mason University| Bronze Level
University Highlights: George Mason University (GMU) is committed to improving bicycle infrastructure on campus to encourage cycling. Bicycling, has highlighted in the transportation master plan, is a key component of the overall transportation demand management system at GMU. The plan establishes physical standards that provide for bike lanes on new roads, inclusion of bike facilities and shower access for new buildings, a transportation coordinator dedicated to all transportation issues, and a bike program manager. The University already provides good bike parking, bike lanes on their major interior loop road, and regular bike events. GMU generally employs a collaborative approach to meeting the needs to bicyclist by including all members of the community in the process of enhancing its current bicycle environment. For example, the University is working with local bicycle shops and a local advocacy group to encourage local government to improve the bicycle infrastructure and bike facilities off-campus. A bicycle commuter program is open to all Mason full-time faculty and staff who bike to any Mason Campus a minimum of eight times per month. Benefits include: a $20 voucher each month for any area bike shops, two complimentary daily parking passes per month, shower facility use at the RAC and Aquatic Center.
