Application ProcessGetting StartedThe Bicycle Friendly State (BFS) program is an annual ranking of the states and an award designation program. The Bicycle Friendly State Ranking Questionnaire and Award Application are currently closed. The application will re-open Fall 2009. Click here for the pdf version (for reference only). State ranking and Award determinationAll 50 states will be ranked annually by the League of American Bicyclists staff based on their responses to the ranking questionnaire. In addition to the annual rankings, States can also apply for further recognition through the BFS award program. Applications are reviewed and scored by a committee of experts, League staff, and local cyclists in the state. States that meet the criteria for recognition will receive platinum, gold, silver or bronze award status for four years. The League staff will continue to work with awardees and those states that do not yet meet the criteria to provide technical assistance and encourage continual improvements. The League of American Bicyclists recognizes newly designated Bicycle Friendly States with an awards ceremony and a formal press announcement. Renewing the designationStates complete a simple renewal form to complement your original application so that the League of American Bicyclists can continue to recognize a state’s progress. Renewals are due every four years after a state is designated or receives their renewal notice. The League will also require a short annual update. Award levels may change based on the renewal feedback. Thank You to these State Coordinators for Their AssistanceMichael Sanders, Arizona
