Bicycle Friendly Business

Washington Area Bicycle Association| Gold Level

Business Highlights: The Washington Area Bicyclist Association not only promotes bicycling outside the office but within the office as well.  They have 100 percent of their staff riding to work more than twice a week. There is secure and convenient bike parking, a company fleet of bikes, basic bike maintenance tools and supplies, a dedicated bike maintenance person, and multiple events throughout Bike Month. WABA encourages a casual dress code that allows staff to wear whatever clothing they feel is necessary for comfortable bicycling and still be accepted in the office environment. The organization annually organizes and coordinates bicycle events including free coffee for bike commuters, group rides, bike safety classes, bike valet parking, and much more.  The office is stocked with healthy food to help employees recharge after biking to a meeting or before a long commute home. Within their office is also a library of bike information with resources such as route finding assistance, a calendar of local bike events, information on proper riding equipment and bike safety information. Most of the print material is available in English and Spanish.

Most Compelling Bike Related Statistic: Ninety nine pecent of WABA's employees bicycle commute 99 percent of the time, in all types of weather, year-round.

Most Compelling Bike Related Accomplishment: WABA handles much of the logistical legwork in setting up 35 area pit stops--distributing food, water, volunteers and t-shirts. The staff runs the largest pit stop, on Freedom Plaza, which attracts over 2,000 riders and features guests like Congressman Earl Blumenauer and DC Mayor Adrian Fenty.
