Bicycle Friendly Business

Upstate Forever| Bronze Level

Business Highlights: Upstate Forever sets an example for other non-profit organizations that bicycling doesn't have to be expensive or exclusively for professionals. With a budget of zero to get the bicycle program underway, Upstate Forever worked closely with the local community to get donations of bicycles, safety equipment, maintenance tools, and a rack.  Employees use their fleet of loaner bikes to commute to and from frequent meetings in the downtown area. Upstate Forever has implemented an incentive program to reduce total car trips, beyond the commute to work.  The top three winners at the end of the year receive a cash award and public recognition. Bike commuters have access to shower facility, maintenance supplies, and a dedicated bike maintenance person.  Commuters receive a cash incentive to bike to work and free secure parking.  The office also has a library of resources, including books on bike safety, maintenance, and a listing of You-tube videos demonstrating safety skills and maintenance. These resources may be checked out by any staff member at any time.    Upstate Forever also participates in Bikeville, the City of Greenville's bicycle friendly community initiative to educate and empower every bicyclist and motorist to Share the Road. This group worked on the downtown bike plan, a monthly lunchtime ride, a bicycle parking ordinance, increased bus transit bike rack capacity, and a complete streets initiative.

Most Significant Bike Related Accomplishment: Upstate Forever’s executive director donated to the Greenville County Greenways Program in support of the new Swamp Rabbit Tram Trail initiative, awarding each employee with a gift of their own plaque recognizing a specific section of the trail. The 13-mile trail system supports pedestrian and bicycle uses through rural and urban areas.
